Recently, I launched two android apps WallByDay (Wallpaper By Day) and PlayByDay (Play Music By day). Being .NET guy, to work on Android apps has given me different experience. If you are using Visual Studio, Dreamweaver or Eclipse for your development and decided to start android app development using Android Studio, you would like to do following customization with Android Studio.
1. Changing Theme:
You may not like the default theme of Android Studio. You can change it
On Windows:
File > Settings >In IDE Settings, click Appearance > select Theme from dropdown list
On Mac:
Android Studio > Preferences > click Appearance > select Theme from dropdown list
If you like Dark theme, select Darcula.
2. Customize Colors & Fonts:
You have selected the theme in last step but want to customize colors and fonts.
On Windows:
File > Settings > In IDE Settings, Editor > Colors & Fonts
On Mac:
Android Studio > Preferences >Editor > Colors & Fonts
By default, you will get all options disabled. First you need to create your scheme. Click on "Save As" button and enter name say "My Scheme" then all options are enabled and you can change font, background and foreground color...etc.
3. Open Projects in New Window:
Being habit of Visual Studio, I am more comfortable to open each project in new window. By default, Android Studio is set to open project in the same window. You can change that and set to open project in new instance.
On Windows:
File > Settings >In IDE Settings, General
On Mac:
Android Studio > Preferences >In IDE Settings, General
Select "Open project in new window" option.
On start-up, Android Studio loads the last project. If you don't want this then uncheck "Reopen last project on start-up". It will make to open Android Studio fast.
4. Show Line Number:
If you want to show line number in editor
On Windows:
File > Settings > In IDE Settings, Editor > Appearance
On Mac:
Android Studio > Preferences >Editor > Appearance
set "Show line numbers" option true.
OR
Right click on the place where the line-numbers should be and there you'll get a small menu. then, mark the "Show Line Numbers" option.
5. Genymotion Emulator:
The Android emulator is too much slow and not working properly. I would recommend to use Genymotion emulator. It is really fast.
Check out the steps to use this plugin for Android Studio.
Hope, it reduces the pain of using different IDE and makes your life easy with Android Studio.
